Why do phone screens work with fingers but not most gloves?

Most modern phone screens work with bare fingers because they use capacitive touch sensing. The screen maintains an electrical field, and a conductive finger changes the local capacitance enough for the controller to locate the touch.

Ordinary gloves put an insulating layer between your finger and the screen, so the electrical coupling can become too weak for the phone to detect. Touchscreen gloves solve that by putting conductive material in the fingertips, and some devices can increase sensitivity enough to work through certain gloves.

Not every touchscreen works the same way: resistive screens can respond to pressure from many objects, and projected-capacitive systems differ in how well they handle thin or thick gloves. That is why “the screen needs skin” is a useful shortcut but not the literal rule.

Cold weather turns using your phone into a ritual where you pull one glove halfway off with your teeth, tap the screen, put it back on, then repeat the entire procedure thirty seconds later because another notification arrived. By the third time you are holding the glove in your mouth while typing with the one finger you chose to sacrifice.

People ask because a touchscreen looks as though it should respond to contact or pressure. The confusing part is that a gloved finger can press just as hard as a bare one and still do nothing, revealing that the phone is measuring an electrical interaction rather than merely noticing that something touched the glass.
