Why Yawning Spreads: The Strange Science of Catching Someone Else’s Yawn

Seeing a yawn can trigger one. Hearing about a yawn can do it. Reading about yawning may already be making this article operationally hazardous.

There are few human activities with less ambition than a yawn. It does not build anything. It does not solve anything. It does not even have the decency to stay private.

One person opens their mouth, inhales deeply, stretches their face into the temporary shape of a garage door, and suddenly everyone nearby begins receiving the same internal memo.

You can try to resist. This mainly turns the yawn into a hostage situation.

The oddest part is that another person does not necessarily need to yawn in front of you. A video can work. A photograph can work. Researchers have reported that merely thinking about or reading about yawning can be enough to provoke the urge in some people. Which means the Institute has now reached the uncomfortable point where explaining the phenomenon may also reproduce it.

This is called contagious yawning. The name makes it sound like something requiring disinfectant, but it is a behavioral response: exposure to another yawn—or sometimes just a representation of one—can increase the likelihood that you yawn too.

The phenomenon is easy to recognize and harder to explain. Scientists have linked it to social processes, attention, perception, and the excitability of the motor system. Yet one of the most popular explanations—that people catch yawns because they are empathetic—turns out to be much less settled than the internet has historically preferred.

That makes contagious yawning an ideal example of ordinary human behavior: everyone recognizes it, nobody scheduled it, and the mechanism is still arguing with itself in the literature.

The Useful Explanation

Contagious yawning is measurable, but people vary a lot

Experiments repeatedly show that yawning can be induced by watching other people yawn. But susceptibility varies sharply from person to person.

In a 2014 PLOS ONE study, Elizabeth Cirulli and colleagues showed 328 healthy participants a three-minute video of people yawning. About 68 percent of participants yawned at least once during the stimulus. Among those who yawned, the number of yawns varied widely. The researchers also found that an individual’s tendency to respond was fairly stable across repeat testing.

That stability matters because it suggests contagious yawning is not merely a random accident caused by one unusually boring afternoon.

The same study tested a long list of possible explanations for why some people are more susceptible than others, including empathy-related measures, sleepiness, and circadian preference. Age was the only measured factor that significantly predicted whether someone yawned, and even age explained only a small portion of the variation.

In other words, science can reliably make a room full of people watch yawning videos and count what happens. It is less successful at explaining why one person immediately joins the program while another remains completely immune.

Attention and perception appear to matter

A contagious response first requires the brain to register the relevant cue.

A 2017 study by Meingold Chan and Chia-Huei Tseng examined whether individual differences in detecting yawning expressions were related to contagious yawning. Participants who were more sensitive to identifying yawning expressions showed more contagious yawning. The effect was specific enough that sensitivity to other emotional expressions did not explain the same pattern.

This supports a straightforward idea: before a yawn can spread socially, the observer has to perceive the yawn as a meaningful action.

That sounds obvious until you remember how often human behavior depends on exactly this kind of supposedly obvious first step. We routinely build elaborate theories around what people feel about a stimulus before confirming whether they were paying attention to the stimulus in the first place.

Attention has also complicated interpretations of contagious yawning in clinical and social-cognition research. Reviews of the literature have noted that differences in visual attention and social inhibition can confound attempts to treat yawning as a simple window into empathy.

The motor system may help determine who catches a yawn

One of the more direct physiological findings came from a 2017 Current Biology study led by Beverley Brown.

Thirty-six adults watched videos of people yawning while researchers measured the excitability and inhibition of each participant’s motor cortex using transcranial magnetic stimulation. The study found that measures of cortical excitability and physiological inhibition predicted a substantial portion of the variation in contagious yawning.

Participants were also told, in different conditions, either to allow themselves to yawn or to resist.

Trying not to yawn increased the urge to yawn and changed whether people expressed full or stifled yawns, but it did not eliminate their underlying susceptibility.

This is an important distinction. The conscious rule—do not yawn—affected the visible behavior. It did not simply switch off the machinery generating the urge.

Anyone who has attempted to conceal a yawn during a meeting will recognize the result. The yawn does not disappear. It becomes a smaller, angrier yawn wearing business casual.

Social closeness may matter, but “empathy test” is too simple

Some studies have found that contagious yawning is more likely between people who are socially close.

In a 2011 observational study, Ivan Norscia and Elisabetta Palagi followed adults in natural social settings and reported that yawning contagion was more frequent and faster among people with closer social bonds. That finding helped fuel the idea that contagious yawning may be connected to empathy or emotional contagion.

But the broader evidence is inconsistent.

A 2017 review by Jorg Massen and Andrew Gallup examined research linking contagious yawning and empathy and concluded that the relationship remained inconclusive. Studies differed in design, measures, populations, and controls. Attention, familiarity, inhibition, and other variables could explain at least some findings that had been interpreted as empathy effects.

A separate 2014 study of 328 participants found little relationship between contagious yawning and the empathy measures it tested. Other experiments have reported associations.

The safest conclusion is therefore not “contagious yawning proves empathy.”

It is that yawning contagion is a socially triggered behavior influenced by multiple factors, and empathy remains one proposed contributor rather than a settled explanation.

This may be less satisfying than a one-sentence personality test, but it has the advantage of being closer to what the evidence actually says.

Even the word “contagious” deserves some caution

Researchers have also questioned how easily spontaneous yawns can be mistaken for socially triggered ones.

Rohan Kapitány and Mark Nielsen argued in a 2017 methodological critique that studies of yawning must account carefully for the baseline probability that a person would have yawned anyway. If two people are tired, bored, or simply existing during the same late-afternoon seminar, one yawn occurring after another does not automatically prove transmission.

Laboratory studies address this by comparing yawning stimuli with control conditions and by analyzing timing and response rates.

So contagious yawning is not merely folklore. There is experimental evidence for it. But the details of how it works—and how much of any given yawn was truly “caught”—require more careful reasoning than watching two people yawn sequentially and declaring a behavioral outbreak.

Humans are apparently equipped with a yawn forwarding system

Most communication requires some cooperation.

If you send an email, the recipient must open it. If you tell a story, the listener must remain conscious. If you place a sign next to a door, someone will still pull when it says push, but at least the sign was given a chance.

Yawning operates at a lower administrative level.

No message is announced. No meaning is agreed upon. One person performs a motor act, another person detects it, and sometimes the second nervous system begins preparing the same act.

This is what makes contagious yawning so satisfying as an everyday mystery. It is an involuntary group activity with no organizer.

Nobody has ever stood up in an office and said, “At 2:17 p.m. we will begin synchronized facial stretching.” Yet the infrastructure appears to be available.

The behavior exposes the gap between urge and permission

The Brown study’s resistance condition is especially recognizable because it separates wanting to yawn from allowing the yawn to appear normally.

That gap exists in many social behaviors.

People suppress laughter at funerals, hide irritation in meetings, delay scratching an itch during formal ceremonies, and attempt to look interested while someone explains a parking-validation system.

The internal event and the public event are not identical.

Yawning makes this distinction unusually visible because suppression produces its own performance: lips compressed, jaw fighting for territory, nostrils reconsidering their career choices, eyes watering while the person insists nothing is happening.

The effort to appear socially controlled can become more conspicuous than the behavior being controlled.

We prefer a flattering explanation for a weird reflex

The empathy explanation has obvious appeal.

If contagious yawning means empathy, then catching a yawn becomes evidence that you are socially sensitive. A completely involuntary mouth movement has somehow become a personality credential.

This is an excellent deal.

Most evidence of character requires sustained behavior. Kindness requires action. Reliability requires repetition. Integrity becomes inconvenient almost immediately.

Contagious yawning, under the strongest popular version of the empathy story, would require only being near another tired person and losing control of your jaw.

Unfortunately, the research does not support using it that way.

Some studies report relationships with social closeness or empathy measures; others do not. Reviews emphasize confounds and inconsistent evidence. Motor excitability and perceptual sensitivity also matter. The phenomenon may involve social cognition without functioning as a clean empathy meter.

The more interesting conclusion is that ordinary behaviors can have several contributing systems at once.

A social cue can be perceived differently by different people. The motor system can vary in responsiveness. Social context can change attention or inhibition. Conscious suppression can change expression without removing the underlying urge.

Human behavior rarely respects the desire for a single explanatory label.

The contagious part may be less mysterious than our reaction to it

We often treat involuntary mimicry as surprising because we like to imagine conscious decisions sitting at the front desk of the brain approving every outgoing action.

They do not.

People mirror posture, facial expressions, speech rhythms, gestures, and other behaviors without issuing themselves a formal authorization.

Contagious yawning belongs to that broader category of automatic responsiveness, although its exact mechanisms remain under study.

What makes it feel uncanny is not simply that one person’s behavior affects another. Humans influence one another constantly.

It is that the chain is so obvious.

Person A yawns.

Person B sees Person A.

Person B experiences an urge.

Person B yawns.

The entire social transmission can unfold before Person B has finished thinking, “I am absolutely not going to yawn just because—”

At which point the mouth has already filed the paperwork.

The Institute’s provisional rule: do not diagnose anyone by their yawn

Because individual susceptibility varies, it can be tempting to turn contagious yawning into a social test.

The research does not justify that.

A person who does not catch your yawn is not therefore unempathetic, antisocial, psychologically unusual, or secretly plotting against the group. A person who yawns instantly has not passed a neurological citizenship exam.

Age, attention, perceptual sensitivity, motor-system properties, context, inhibition, and other unmeasured factors can all influence the response.

This is a useful general lesson beyond yawning: when a behavior has many possible causes, converting it into a character judgment is usually faster than understanding it and less accurate.

The person who did not yawn may simply not be susceptible.

Or they may have looked away.

Or they may have yawned thirty seconds earlier.

Or they may be suppressing it successfully and deserve recognition for an achievement the rest of us did not know was competitive.

What This Seems to Tell Us

Contagious yawning is one of those behaviors that becomes stranger the more carefully it is examined.

The basic phenomenon is supported: seeing another person yawn can increase the chance that you yawn too, and people differ consistently in how susceptible they are. Attention and perception matter. Motor-cortex excitability appears to matter. Social closeness may matter in some contexts. The simple claim that contagious yawning is a direct measure of empathy remains unproven.

The larger lesson is less about yawning than about explanation.

Ordinary behavior often emerges from several systems operating at once: perception, physiology, learned social rules, attention, context, and conscious attempts at control. We notice the final visible action and then go looking for one clean reason.

The nervous system did not promise us one.

So if this article made you yawn, science can tell you that you have participated in a documented behavioral phenomenon.

It cannot yet tell you exactly why you did it.

And if you did not yawn, congratulations. You have successfully resisted approximately 2,000 words of institutional provocation.
