What we investigate

These are broad, open-ended areas of everyday curiosity — not formal departments, permanent organizational units, or a fixed taxonomy. Each is a place where ordinary life tends to get more complicated than it needs to be.

  1. Everyday Behavior

    The habits people repeat, defend, deny, and immediately recognize when someone else does them.

  2. Social Rituals

    The unwritten procedures governing greetings, lines, small talk, apologies, invitations, and pretending not to notice things.

  3. Objects and Systems

    The tools, interfaces, signs, packages, forms, and machines that supposedly make life easier after sufficient instruction.

  4. Language and Meaning

    The phrases people use automatically, the meanings they assume, and the misunderstandings everyone agrees to continue.

  5. Cultural Contradictions

    The places where shared values, modern convenience, etiquette, technology, and actual behavior stop agreeing with one another.

  6. Unnecessary Complexity

    The procedures, decisions, and design choices that turn a simple task into an afternoon and possibly a password reset.
