About the Department
Research remit
The Department of Built Environment & Public Infrastructure studies the ordinary physical systems that shape how people enter, exit, wait, circulate, reach, avoid, lean on, press, step over, and occasionally collide with the spaces around them.
Buildings and public infrastructure are full of features that disappear into familiarity. Doors close at particular speeds. Stairs include landings. Restrooms use standardized fixtures with locally variable gaps. Crosswalk controls, tactile surfaces, fire doors, hydrants, signs, vestibules, railings, thresholds, and protective barriers become visible mainly when someone asks why they are there—or when they fail to behave as expected.
The Department treats these features as evidence of accumulated design decisions. Some respond to safety codes. Some manage weather, traffic, accessibility, maintenance, circulation, privacy, or emergency conditions. Others reflect compromises among competing needs. A feature that seems badly designed from one perspective may be solving a different problem that is not obvious to the person encountering it.
This makes the built environment especially suitable for Dunce Dynamics research. Ordinary spaces are dense with hidden explanations. The research task is to identify which explanation matters without turning every door hinge into a civilization-scale theory.
What We Investigate
Questions inside the system
We investigate how buildings and shared infrastructure guide behavior through physical design. Recurring questions include why entrances are arranged in particular ways, how accessibility features communicate through touch and contrast, why safety systems sometimes inconvenience normal use, how public fixtures are standardized, and how materials respond to moisture, temperature, pressure, wear, and repeated use.
The Department is also interested in the difference between intentional design and emergent behavior. People adapt to buildings. They prop doors, avoid routes, choose particular stairs, wait in preferred locations, ignore signs, and create informal shortcuts. Those adaptations can reveal where the designed system and the experienced system diverge.

Buildings, Entrances & Circulation Studies doors, vestibules, stairs, entrances, corridors, and other features that control how people move into and through buildings. The program focuses on the relationship between geometry, flow, weather control, security, and ordinary convenience.

Accessibility & Inclusive Infrastructure Examines tactile surfaces, Braille, accessible routes, controls, warnings, and other design features intended to make shared environments usable by people with different sensory and mobility needs.

Public Fixtures & Everyday Infrastructure Studies signs, buttons, hydrants, controls, barriers, and recurring public fixtures whose functions are widely encountered but not always widely understood.

Safety, Codes & Protective Design Investigates fire doors, protective barriers, warning systems, separation requirements, and other features shaped by risk management and code obligations. The program asks why normal convenience is sometimes deliberately constrained in order to preserve performance under abnormal conditions.

Environmental Behavior of Buildings & Materials Studies swelling, fogging, squeaking, condensation, expansion, moisture effects, and other ordinary material responses that make buildings seem temperamental despite following entirely physical rules.
