About the Department

Research remit

The Department of Home & Domestic Life studies the household as both a physical environment and a small operating system: appliances, materials, cleaning routines, food storage, maintenance, comfort, shared spaces, and the repeated behaviors people perform because the last person who understood the system is no longer available for questions.

Home life is full of mechanisms that become invisible through repetition. Refrigerators cycle. Dishwashers move water and heat through different materials. Washing machines manage unbalanced loads. Doors swell. Windows fog. Floors squeak. Freezers collect frost. Cutting boards warp. Laundry changes shape, texture, and smell depending on combinations of water, heat, detergent, fabric, and time that people generally encounter through trial, error, and the occasional label printed in a font intended for microscopy.

The Department is interested in these mechanisms, but also in the routines built around them. People clean before guests arrive differently than they clean for themselves. Household members develop informal rules about storage, maintenance, noise, shared surfaces, and when an appliance problem becomes serious enough to mention aloud. Domestic systems therefore combine physics, materials, product design, habit, social coordination, and tolerance for minor inconvenience.

Home is also where many designed systems meet long-term use. A product may be optimized for purchase, installation, efficiency, safety, or manufacturing, while the household experiences it through maintenance, cleaning, aging, storage, and repeated interaction. That gap creates a large amount of ordinary research territory.

What We Investigate

Questions inside the system

We investigate how household systems behave over time and how people adapt to them. Recurring questions include why appliances behave differently under different loads, why moisture changes materials, why cleaning methods work on some surfaces but not others, how food storage affects household decisions, and how domestic routines emerge without ever being formally agreed upon.

The Department also studies the social side of shared space: preparation for guests, division of maintenance, informal storage territories, expectations about cleanliness, and the small coordination problems created when several people treat the same space as “mine,” “ours,” or “I thought you were going to do that.”

Research Programs

The Department’s recurring research territories

  • Household Systems & Appliances Studies refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, toilets, freezers, and other household systems whose everyday operation involves mechanics, temperature, pressure, water, airflow, sensors, and repeated use.
  • Cleaning, Laundry & Maintenance Examines cleaning routines, laundry behavior, odor, residue, wear, upkeep, and the practical decisions involved in keeping household systems usable over time.
  • Kitchens, Food Storage & Household Materials Studies food-storage behavior, cutting boards, containers, kitchen materials, moisture, temperature, and the interaction between household materials and the things people put on or inside them.
  • Home Design, Comfort & Environmental Behavior Investigates temperature, humidity, condensation, sound, floor and door behavior, windows, ventilation, and the ways home materials respond to environmental conditions.
  • Domestic Routines, Hosting & Shared-Space Behavior Studies preparation, hosting, household habits, shared-space coordination, and the informal procedures people develop to make a private environment workable for more than one person.

Method and context

The Department starts with household observations and separates physical mechanism from domestic habit. We consider materials, temperature, moisture, maintenance, design, repeated use, and shared expectations. The objective is to explain why familiar household systems behave in unfamiliar ways without implying that anyone should have read the manual before asking.
