About the Department

Research remit

The Department of Digital Technology & Interfaces studies the everyday relationship between people and systems that communicate through screens, buttons, indicators, files, sounds, notifications, estimates, menus, touch surfaces, and messages that occasionally explain exactly what went wrong after explaining nothing while it was happening.

Modern technology is often discussed in terms of capability: what a device, application, or service can do. Everyday experience depends just as much on interpretation. People need to know whether a system heard them, whether something is saving, whether a process is finished, whether an estimate means anything, where a file went, which version is current, what an icon represents, and whether pressing the same control again will help or simply confirm that they are now emotionally involved.

The Department studies those moments as interface problems, information problems, reliability problems, and human-behavior problems. A progress bar can reduce uncertainty even when it is imprecise. A file naming convention can become an informal information architecture. A video-call mute button is a technical control with social consequences. A printer jam is a mechanical failure that becomes a workflow event the moment someone needs the document.

The central research territory is therefore not “technology” in the abstract. It is the practical negotiation between what a system knows, what it communicates, what a person expects, and what happens when those four things are not aligned.

What We Investigate

Questions inside the system

We investigate how people interpret status, feedback, controls, errors, organization, and reliability in everyday digital systems. Recurring questions include why progress indicators feel reassuring, why time estimates are unreliable, how people organize files and browser tabs, why interface conventions persist, how input devices shape behavior, and how small system failures create disproportionate uncertainty.

The Department also examines communication platforms because interfaces influence social behavior. Remote meetings, messaging systems, notification patterns, self-view, mute controls, and presence indicators do more than transmit information. They create new expectations about responsiveness, visibility, attention, and availability.

Research Programs

The Department’s recurring research territories

  • Interfaces & Feedback Systems Studies progress indicators, battery estimates, status messages, response signals, loading behavior, and the mechanisms systems use to tell people what is happening—or imply that something is happening.
  • Files, Information & Digital Organization Examines folders, filenames, browser tabs, version conventions, desktop storage, search behavior, and the informal systems people invent to keep digital information findable.
  • Input Devices & Human-Computer Interaction Studies keyboards, trackpads, touchscreens, gesture controls, and other mechanisms through which people translate intention into machine-readable action.
  • Communication Platforms & Remote Interaction Investigates video calls, messaging platforms, online presence, mediated social cues, and the behavioral conventions that emerge when interaction is filtered through software.
  • Reliability, Errors & Everyday System Friction Studies jams, failed inputs, ghost touches, ambiguous errors, delays, reconnection, and other moments when a system's internal state becomes a mystery delivered directly to the user.

The Department remains primary when the interface, device, information model, or feedback mechanism is the central research question.

How this Department works

Method and context

The Department examines technology from the user's side of the interface while remaining attentive to what the system may actually be doing underneath. We separate capability from communication, failure from uncertainty, and design convention from user habit. The goal is to explain why everyday technology behaves the way it does—and why a perfectly functioning system can still leave a person convinced that it is thinking about ruining their afternoon.
